BID Evening Meeting with Malcolm Fraser Chair of National Review of Town Centres

Malcolm Fraser, a leading Scottish Architect and Chair of the Scottish Government's National Review of Town Centre's gave an inspiring speech to a full house at Wednesday's BID Business Meeting at the Mercure.

Over 90 people representing BID area businesses and other stakeholders took the opportunity to hear Malcolm talk about the key proposals from the Review which aims to rejuvenate town & city centres.  The recommendations include:

A ‘town centre first’ principle whereby public bodies will consider how they can support town centres before considering development elsewhere

Working with housing providers to bring empty town centre properties back into use as affordable housing

A town centre focus to review current business rates incentivisation schemes

A recommendation that public bodies should consider the impact of proposals to relocate services out of town centres

Broadening the appeal of town centres with a mix of leisure, public facilities and homes

There was lively and focused comment in the question & answer session particularly regarding the level of out of town development in Inverness and the example that isn’t be coming from the public bodies who continue to move out of town.
