Old High St Stephens Church

The Old High Church is the historic town church of Inverness- the oldest Church in the city.

It is situated on ‘St Michael’s mound, where St Columba of Iona is said to have preached. There has been a church on the site since Celtic times. It was used as prison after Battle of Culloden (1746); prisoners are said to have been executed in the historic graveyard.

The current building mostly 18th century with 19th century additions, but part of the tower dates back to the 14th century. The curfew is still rung from the clock tower at 8pm every night.

As the Town Church, it is the venue of annual ‘Kirking of the Council’ when Provost and Councillors process from Town House for worship.

There is a fine Willis Organ. The chancel is of Iona marble, and there are historic monuments to many Inverness worthies.
